2014 Ski Tour – Shredding Strings & Slopes

We’re a week into the 6th annual Ski Tour and already it’s poised to be the best Ski Tour yet! We kicked it off in Big Sky, MT where we got to spend 4 days skiing the beautiful Big Sky Resort and picking with bluegrass greats like Sam Bush, Tony Trischka, Ronnie McCoury, Jason Carter, and Drew Emmitt at the Big Sky Big Grass festival.

Then it was off to 2 sold-out, raging nights in Jackson Hole! We spent our time shredded strings and slopes alike with fans, friends and the Jackson Hole Ski Patrol. Our second night’s show also doubled as the annual Sweethogs and Swinehearts Ball, a benefit for the Ski Patrol. We had such a phenomenal time while in town, it was hard to leave. Definitely looking forward to going back.

Ski Tour wraps up on February 23 at the WinterWonderGrass Festival in Avon, but there’s plenty happening before then in the latter half of Ski Tour. We’re looking forward to more raging shows and a few ski meet-ups at our remaining stops in Park City, Fort Collins, Aspen, Telluride and Gunnison. Visit our Events page on Facebook to make sure you don’t miss a moment of the fun.

    The Road to Boulder Traveled

In September of 2013, the Colorado Front Range was devastated by heavy rains and flooding that destroyed practically all of the towns of Lyons and Longmont. With our personal connection to Lyons in particular, and the role the area has long-played in the bluegrass community, we felt an urgent need to take action and immediately started looking for ways to help the areas recover. In December, we hit the road with others whose roots run deep through Colorado—Paper Bird, Oskar Blues Brewery, Osprey Packs, Elevation Outdoors and the reemerging Madden Equipment—to raise funds, national awareness and resources to assist in rebuilding the community through the CAN’d Aid Foundation.

Thanks to your contributions, we’ve raised nearly $5,000 already for Oskar Blues’ CAN’d Aid Foundation, and we’re not done yet! You can help us in our mission to support the rebuilding of Lyons by donating to the CAN’d Aid Foundation in the following ways:

    The Ties That Bind Us

The Infamous Stringdusters at The National for VA.NYE. photo by Tom Daly

As we bid bon voyage to 2013, we reflect on a year of memories forged in our ties to one another. Chris Pandolfi (banjo) said it best in a note to The Jamily (The ‘Dusters hardcore fan base) on the Got Dusted Facebook page

“2013 was such a big year for us, and it had everything to do with you guys. It wasn’t necessarily a year of mainstream saturation or publicity (which every band wants), but it truly was a year that everything changed for us as a band. 2013 was the year that you guys, our core fans, came together to transform the Infamous Stringdusters into something much bigger than a group of 5 guys chasing a dream. Every band thinks success will be the tie that binds them, but that changed. It’s our community that makes this feel like something real, something that will last for many years. It’s knowing that every show will have familiar faces on the rail, seeing you guys make the kind of commitment that we make, and knowing what a wonderful group of people you are. It’s something I never even dreamed about, it’s deeply inspiring and it’s had such a profound impact on everything we do. As things change and grow we’ll always find ways to make sure you guys are at the center of the experience.

“The connections that we solidified with all of you in 2013 are the most meaningful connections we will ever make. There are way to many people to tag or name, but you know who you are and you know we love you. Here’s to many more years of doing this thing together. Thank you a million times and happy new year to all!!”

We’re so grateful to have our Jamily with us on our journey and, being a Charlottesville-based band, we loved welcoming the New Year with all of you in our home state at The Festy presents a Virginia New Year’s Experience.  Fellow Virginia artists Larry Keel & Natural Bridge, Sons of Bill, Love Canon, Carl Anderson and No BS! Brass Band added to the energy our fans brought, creating an epic 2-night New Year’s Experience for the ages!

It was a thrill and an honor to start our 2014 memories in our home state, and now we’re looking forward to seeing you all again throughout the year.  In the short-term, we’re heading to Miami this weekend to get on the boat and gain our sea legs on Jam Cruise! Then, we’ll be rolling in hot (and tan) for 2 nights at Georgia Theatre, January 10 & January 11! (Click on the dates to RSVP to the Facebook event–included info on ticket links, show times, and more.) There will also be Happy Hours each night for the Jamily to get together and catch up before the show, so stay tuned for details coming soon.

Also on the horizon of the near future… Be looking for more shows to announce, album release details and other exciting news coming at the end of January! Make sure you’ve signed up for our email list to be one of the first to know.

As with many bands on the bluegrass scene today, Colorado holds a very special place in our hearts. Travis Book (bass) grew up amongst the pines and mountains of Palmer Lake. Years later, the Planet Bluegrass concert grounds in Lyons, CO booked us for Rockygrass and the Rockygrass Academy. One of our first great shows was at Rogers Hall in Lyons, as part of their High Street Concert Series. Andy Hall, our dobro player, also calls the town of Lyons, CO home—a town that’s been devastated by September’s flooding. Our Colorado roots run deep, particularly through Lyons—a town that, in some parts, has been completely destroyed. We’re helping this beloved town rise from the tragedy by partnering with Oskar Blues to make our 2013 Road to Boulder Tour and 2014 Ski Tour a fund raising campaign to benefit the Oskar Blues Can’d Aid Foundation, whose immediate focus is on maximizing fundraising efforts for the communities of Lyons and Longmont, CO. $1.00 from every ticket sold along the two tour circuits will go directly to Can’d Aid Foundation. Click here for a full list of our tour dates, or you can click here to donate now.

The Festy: Just When You Think It Can’t Get No Better, Then It Does

The Festy is always an amazing and unforgettable Experience. It seems like each year it gets better and better, as we continue to create life-long memories with more and more fantastic people. Everyone on Team Festy takes pride in providing you with all the options you need to create your own perfect Experience for the weekend. As your host band, we are most proud to curate the weekend’s artist line-up, and wanted to share with you some of our musical highlights from this year’s Festy Experience.

We can’t imagine a better start to a fantastic weekend than sharing the stage with Della Mae. Opening up the main Concert Grounds on Thursday and breaking in The Southern Stage for the early-arrival campers was a blast! It’s always a delight to get to hear the ladies of Della Mae pick, and an even bigger treat to get to play along with them.

Our own dobro player, Andy Hall, inaugurated the 2013 Main Stage by hosting Opening Ceremonies on Friday. In addition to playing his familiar dobro, Hall also laid out a few bluesy tunes on the lap steel, including our nation’s anthem.

When we invited Marco Benevento to The Festy Experience, we knew we’d be in for some fearless and groovy tunes, but we had no idea just how enthralling it would be.  Even Travis Book said, “Marco Benevento blew my mind.” Their music alone was enough to get everyone moving, but the crowd went nuts when the bandmates started trading the tiger mask along with their solos.

Saturday was packed to the brim with amazing artists cranking out one phenomenal set after another! Chris Jones & the Night Drivers, Aoife O’Donovan, Chris Thile & Michael Daves, Nicki Bluhm & the Gramblers, Giant Panda… It was non-stop from noon until midnight! Saturday afternoon saw Travis Book and wife Sarah Siskind take to the stage together, this time making their Festy debut as Sunliner. First beginning as a duo, Sunliner added a drummer for their set under The Southern tent to (temporarily?) evolve into a power trio to rock The 4th Annual Festy Experience.

The biggest highlight of Saturday, possibly of the entire weekend (and, dare we say, of any Festy to date), was getting to play a couple of songs with John Scofield during our first Saturday set. Talk about fulfilling a life-long dream! It was so surreal to jam with Scofield on his tune Kelpers. Then, the whole concert grounds were set ablaze as Sco, on guitar, traded solos with Chris Pandolfi, on banjo, during Fire. We had watched the crowd heat up during the amazing John Scofield Uberjam Band. To then see the entirety of the main Concert Grounds pulsating to the beat of the epic back-and-forth Sco-Panda jam… no words can describe the overwhelming feelings of pure joy!

Sunday morning’s precipitation led us to open the main concert grounds early so we could move the 10:30 AM Gospel Hour, a year tradition of The Workshop Stage in Basecamp, to the cover of The Southern Stage. The Gospel Hour, hosted by our own fiddle player, Jeremy Garrett, has come to be known for its guest sit-ins. 2013 Gospel Hour will be hard to top next year, as Garrett’s “sermon” this year was all about family. Whether related by blood, marriage or long-time friendship, you couldn’t look at the Sunday Morning Gospel stage without seeing a few family ties. Long-time friends and musical cohorts Jon Weisberger, Ned Luberecki, Chris Jones and Chris Eldridge (former Stringdusters guitarist), and ‘Dusters brethren Andy Falco and Andy Hall were some of the first to join Garrett on stage; followed by husband-and-wife duos Andy and Janice Hall, Travis Book and Sarah Siskind, and Jeremy and Connie Garrett. The family theme continued as the Garrett clan circled the mics on stage and treated the audience to some good ol’ fashion shape note harmonizing.  Of course, no musical family affair at The Festy would be complete without a full-on dusting, so The ‘Duster “brothers” hopped on stage and finished out the Gospel Hour with Let It Go and One More Bridge.

Before Railroad Earth closed out the festival on Sunday, Andy Falco and Chris Pandolfi rocked The Southern Stage as Founding Fathers. Everywhere these guys go, they’ve been wowing audiences with their unique beats, samples and shreds.  The constant evolution of their sound makes every Founding Fathers set a unique dub grassy-rock odyssey, and their Sunday performance was no different.  Andy Hall even sat in on the lap steel, cranking the shred level to 11.

It seems like every year The Festy Experience gets better and better—and, in spite of the rain, this year was no different. Though the rain was falling, the grounds were still alight with bright smiling faces, crackling campfires, and hot tunes.  A big thanks to everyone who shared their Columbus Day weekend with us—friends, family and Jamily from near and far.  We all made memories that will last a lifetime, and we look forward to doing it all again next year.

    Ending the American Rivers Tour

All Photos and Video by Harrison Buck

We’re finally reflecting on this summer’s American Rivers Tour, and we can honestly say we made some of the greatest memories in the band’s history. From the music to the fans to the wild and scenic settings we were able to explore, this was an adventure that will stay with us forever.

It started with 10 shows in some of our favorite mountain towns. We’re grateful for the support and energy that came our way, when we hit stages in Utah, Colorado, Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming. The run then culminated with a six-day float on the Middle Fork of Idaho’s Salmon River. After a plane dropped us in the middle of nowhere, we spent nearly a week in a pristine unspoiled wilderness area, guided by the fine folks at Idaho River Adventures. It was a time to make new friends, new music, and new connections to the natural world around us. Check out the short documentary that captures the experience.

We’d like to offer special thanks to our tour sponsors: Patagonia, Osprey, Klean Kanteen, and Moab Brewery. The combined efforts of these great companies and the tickets purchased by our loyal fans raised nearly $10,000 for American Rivers, an organization working hard to protect our nation’s river and streams. We’re planning to keep in touch with American Rivers, follow their efforts, share what we’ve learned, and anticipate future adventures together.
