  • New to taping, and lost gold. Appalachian Uprising!??! (8 posts)

If there was a taper at the Appalachian Uprising show I will be forever grateful if you share. Also not having this show in my library has brought me to the conclusion that I need to become a taper. (too many gems lost forever). I’m completely ignorant to such things. Would anyone have a recommendation of what equipment to use, or start shopping for? Budget will be a concern, but I also know you sometimes get what you pay for and it can be cheaper to spend a tad more up front, then to spend it again later on. Thanks to all.

Hey Trevor – I tape shows, but I was not at the Appalachian Uprising show. Taping shows and buying equipment on a budget involves many questions… The best place to start is at http://www.taperssection.com. Register at the site, read a lot before posting, use the search tabs and learn all you could want to know from those folks.

Sage and Spirit, thanks so much for the help! I may have been buzzed at the time but the Appalachian Uprising show was probably the most exciting show I’ve seen this year (25+) but I’m under the impression that it would have showed up by now if someone had it. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

      Hi Trevor,

I have been taping since 1988 and I have used many different microphones, DAT machines, Mic Pre-amps, A/D converters …you name it, and I have done it or used it.

The recorder I use right now and am delighted with is the Sony PCM M-10. It is easy to use and packed with great features. It has built-in mics BUT in has a ‘Line-In’ so that you can run external mics.

I could go and on about it…

The prices vary but it costs less than $300.

This should be the very first piece of equipment you buy.

Please keep me posted as I am willing to share my 2 cents with you…

      Clay,
Thank you so much! I’m probably going to try and find a used model from E-Bay. Are you aware of any updated features or changes of PCM M-10, or will any used one I come across be the same as the next? What do I need to know about external microphones? Once again I want something as affordable as possible, but don’t want to feel like I need to upgrade right away either. Thanks again for sending me in the right direction.

      Hi Trevor,

Sorry for the delay; I had spinal surgery 2 weeks ago and was in the hospital.

The Sony PCM M-10 that I’ve had for the past 3 years has every feature you would want for taping concerts, unless you want to do more complicated things like record in 5.1 surround sound or or record multi-track -like for an album!

I am not aware of any updated manufacturing for the Sony PCM M-10…

I would spring for a brand new one from Amazon because if you have a problem with it, you will be delighted with Amazon’s customer service and return policy.I would not buy an M-10 from some one selling their old one. The peace of mind from purchasing from a company like Amazon is worth the 75 bucks. No, lol, I don’t work for Amazon!

There are many variables that swirl about in the making a great audience recording. If you are going to drop some serious cash, drop it on your microphones. Anice pair of Schoeps or Neumanns will set you back anywhere from $850 > $2000 per microphone. To power those microphone you would need 48 volt phantom power and to avoid using the pre-amps built in to the recorder, you would need to drop a solid $1000 > $2500 for an external mic pre-amp. You would also need to buy a battery system to power the mics and the pre-amp.

These prices aren’t written in stone or anything, but expect to pay these prices for a higher-end system.

With that stated, what is your budget?

Thanks so much for the info. Currently my budget will be to save the funds needed. I’m currently also saving for a new guitar, so it’s going to be a difficult decision on which gets the first nod.
